Northern Ireland – Guided Walking Tour – Giants, Saints & Legends – 8 Day
This tour will take you from the Irish Lake District of Fermanagh and the Marble Arch Caves Global Geo Park, through heartland of Northern Ireland to the Sperrin Mountains. Then further north we will see the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Giants Causeway and explore the monumental Causeway Coast. Then travel south via Belfast to St. Patricks Country on the beach of Strangford Lough. Finally, to the Kingdom of Mourne and the mythical Mountains of Mourne.
DAY 1 PICKUP AT AIRPORT
Departing Dublin Airport at 1 pm we will travel north, stopping at the historical site of the Loughcrew Cairns, on our way to the Irish Lake District of Fermanagh where we will spend the first two nights.
DAY 2 MARBLE ARCH CAVES GLOBAL GEOPARK Distance: 14 km, Ascent: 550 m, Walking Time: 4hrs
Today’s walk is a scenic secluded walk wondering along farmland and a boardwalk over ancient bogs to a wild plateau trail to the mountain summit. On the top stands an ancient burial cairn dating 2500-500 BC. You will be rewarded with a unbelievable view of the countryside beneath.
DAY 3 MARBLE ARCH CAVES GLOBAL GEOPARK & SEAMUS HEANEY HOME PLACE
We will visit the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark. You will be guided by a local guide through a fascinating natural paradise of rivers, waterfalls and the remarkable cave formations. The caves may be closed during periods of heavy rains. In the afternoon we will visit the town of Dungannon, the ancient capital of Ulster. Then travel to the Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney’s Home Place.
DAY 4 CARNTOGHER WAY Distance: 10 km, Ascent: 300m, Walking time: 3 hrs
This walk takes us to the historic Carntogher Mountain with wonderful views of the countryside. This area is infused in mythology and archaeological custom and is home to several historical monuments visible in the landscape. Travelers to the new worlds would have left stones on the summit is the emigrants’ cairn, the place they last viewed their homelands before leaving from the port of Derry.
DAY 5 THE GIANTS CAUSEWAY Distance: 10 km, Ascent 80 m, Walking time: 3hrs
Today we travel to the Causeway Coast and the famous Giant’s Causeway. Our walk takes us along the gorgeous shore to the remarakble Causeway where we will explore the landmark. The area is home to an assortment of plant species and birds including the Chough and Peregrine Falcon.
DAY 6 BELFAST & ST PATRICK’S COUNTRY
Today we leave the Causeway Coast for Belfast along the Causeway Coastal Route. In Belfast you will have free time where you can visit the Titanic centre, take one of the black taxi tours of the cities cultural murals or relax and enjoy the cities shopping opportunities. In the afternoon we will go to Downpartick and to see the Downpatrick Centre and St. Patrick’s grave before ending with a calming walk along the waterfront of Strangford Lough.
DAY 7 DUNDRUM BAY & THE MOURNES Distance: 12 km, Ascent 100 m, Waling time: 3 hrs
Today you will start in the coastal village of Dundrum. You will stroll to the shores of Dundrum Bay and to the Murlough National Nature Reserve and its 6000-year-old sand dune system. From the reserve, you will walk beside the beaches of Dundrum Bay to the seaside town of Newcastle offering incredible views of the Mourne Mountains.
