Ireland – Aran Islands & Western Way – 6 Day – Self-Guided Walking Tour
Starting in Galway and travelling to Inishmore, you will hike the largest of the renowned Aran Islands. The Western Way is a remote walking route that leads through the countryside of Connemara. Walking through a wild place with poetic roots and haunting history, and some of the best views in Ireland.
DAY 1 TRAVEL TO GALWAY CITY
Arriving at Shannon, Dublin or Galway Airport you will take a bus or train to your first first night stay in Galway City. It is not always possible to get accommodation directly in the city so you may have to stay on the outskirts of the city. After settling in you can spend your afternoon exploring this awesome and festive place.
DAY 2 GALWAY CITY TO INISHMORE Distance: 10 km Ascent 70 m, Walking time: 3 hrs
Take public transport to Rossaveal to take a ferry across the sea to the Aran Island Inishmore. This section has cliff and coastal walks along stretches of limestone pavement and a community still living the Celtic traditions. Your accommodations on the island will be in the village of Kilronan. After getting familiar with your accommodation, you have the time to explore the incredible landscape of the eastern part of the island.
3 INISHMORE & DUN AENGUS Distance: 18 km, Ascent 220 m, Walking time 5 hrs
Your second day takes you to the north side of the island to reach the hamlet of Kilmurvey. You will see the Dun Aonghasa, one of the most important prehistoric stone forts in Ireland. The view from here is unlike anything else. The trail keeps going through the townland of Gort na gCapall and back to Kilronan, where you will have the opportunity to go shopping and sample some of the local drinks in one of the village pub’s.
DAY 4 MAAM TO LOUGH INAGH, Distance: 15 km, Ascent 280 m, Walking time 4, 5 hrs
Day 4 starts with the 8:15 ferry to Rossaveel, where a taxi will take you to the start of the walk in Maam, about a 45 minute drive. This trail has a mild ascent into the mountains, by St. Patrick’s Church and Holy Well. It is said that this is St. Patricks resting spot on his way to Croag Patrick a sacred mountain. You will pass the spine of the Mamturk Mountains where there are breathtaking views back into the Maam Valley and to the “Twelve Bens” mountain range.
DAY 5 LOUGH INAGH TO LEENAUN Distance: 14 km, Ascent 85 m, Walking time 4 hrs
You depart Lough Inagh walking directly from your accommodation on an old road that dates back possibly thousands of years. The trail passes the Mamturk Mountains and old ruins. This area has probably been unpopulated since the 1840’s. This part of the trail that offers you great taste of calmness and tranquility. As you descend to the village of Leenaun you will have some marvelous scene over Ireland’s only fjord “Killary Fjord”. Your day ends in Leenaun.
DAY 6 DEPART
Tour ends, and you start your journey home.
